A landlord cannot simply change your locks or throw your belongings on the street for missing rent. In the U.S., they must go through a formal court process called an "Unlawful Detainer" or eviction lawsuit, and only a judge can order your removal.
If you receive a "Notice to Pay or Quit," do not ignore it or flee. Contact a local Legal Aid office immediately to file an answer with the court, request a grace period, or mount a legal defense against an unfair eviction.
