노인 학대는 육체적인 폭행뿐만 아니라 욕설로 공포감을 주거나(정서적 학대), 간병인이 식사와 약을 챙겨주지 않는 행위(방임), 그리고 가족이나 지인이 노인의 소셜 연금이나 은행 계좌를 허락 없이 사용하는 행위(재정 착취)를 모두 포함합니다.
특히 영어에 서툴고 자녀에게 의존할 수밖에 없는 한인 노인들은 피해를 당해도 신고하지 못하는 경우가 많습니다. 주변에 학대가 의심되는 노인이 있다면 각 주의 '성인 보호국(Adult Protective Services, APS)'에 익명으로 신고하여 정부 차원의 개입을 요청할 수 있습니다.
